Use an adult-led, age-appropriate setup, keep private details out of prompts and make the child the creator, checker or decision-maker—not a passive copyist.
Seven ideas, one rule
Every activity should end with the child making something or explaining something without the tool. That is how “screen time” becomes a skill-building moment instead of digital chewing gum.
1. Build a local story
Ask AI for three story openings set in a familiar place. Your child chooses one, changes the characters and writes the ending. Discuss which details feel real and which are stereotypes.
2. Make a question ladder
Choose a school topic and ask for questions from easy to challenging. The child answers on paper, then uses the tool only to compare reasoning and identify the next practice step.
3. Run a fact detective game
Ask AI five claims about Nigerian animals, history or geography. The child labels each “likely”, “uncertain” or “needs checking”, then verifies them with a book or trusted website.
4. Design a better instruction
Give the child a vague prompt such as “tell me about water”. Improve it together by adding audience, format, length and purpose. This quietly teaches communication and precision.
5. Create a family budget puzzle
Use fictional naira amounts to plan a picnic or school project. Let the child calculate the totals independently and explain which choices mattered. Never enter real bank or household account information.
6. Compare two explanations
Ask for a child-friendly and an expert explanation of the same concept. Highlight words that changed, then let the child create a third explanation in their own voice.
7. Make an error museum
Collect funny, harmless AI mistakes. Ask what caused the mistake and how a human could catch it. The lesson is simple: confidence is not evidence.
Make it work in a real home
