Ask your child what they think AI is, then demonstrate one safe, useful task such as turning a story idea into questions. Do not begin by giving a child an unrestricted account.
Curiosity before complexity
Children do not need to know how a model is trained before they can understand that AI predicts and generates responses from patterns. They do need to know that a fluent answer is not automatically true, private or wise.
A five-step first lesson
- Ask what they already notice. “Where have you seen a recommendation, voice assistant or face filter?”
- Explain the tool plainly. “AI is software that finds patterns and produces an answer. It can help, but it can also make mistakes.”
- Choose a low-risk task. Create a quiz about animals, improve a fictional story opening or classify household objects.
- Check the output together. Ask what sounds wrong, what needs evidence and what information should never be shared.
- Close with a family rule. Use AI to learn and create; keep humans responsible for decisions.
Use familiar Nigerian examples
Market maths
Ask AI for a fictional budgeting puzzle, then let the child solve it and check the arithmetic with an adult.
Storytelling
Build a story set in Lagos, Kano or Enugu. The child chooses the characters, values and ending.
Language play
Compare a short English explanation with a familiar phrase, while discussing that translation can lose meaning.
Fact detective
Give the tool one deliberately tricky question and teach the child to verify its answer with a book or trusted site.
What not to share
Keep names, school details, home addresses, phone numbers, passwords, family conflicts, identifiable photos and private medical information out of prompts. If a task needs personal context, replace it with a fictional example.
How to keep the conversation open
Children may hide AI use if the first response is anger. Tell them they can show you an answer that feels strange, unsafe or embarrassing without being punished for asking. Review the tool together and focus on judgement rather than shame.
