The ordinary WhatsApp Business app remains free for core messaging and business tools. Meta One is an optional subscription for extra features in the app. The WhatsApp Business Platform (API) is a separate product with message-based charges. Meta One does not change API pricing.
What is actually free, and what can cost money?
1. The WhatsApp Business app: still free
A Lagos fashion seller using the ordinary Business app to answer buyers, manage a profile and use its core tools does not suddenly owe Meta a fee for every chat. WhatsApp's own Meta One page says the free app, messaging and core tools are not changing. Buying a subscription is optional.
2. Meta One: an optional upgrade
Meta announced Meta One in September 2026 as a family of paid plans across its apps. For eligible businesses, the WhatsApp Business version may include profile and verification features, impersonation protection and more access to Meta Business Agent. Some benefits stretch across Meta products; they are not a blanket promise that one WhatsApp purchase verifies every account you own. Plans, benefits and availability vary by region, app and account. Check what your own Business app actually offers before subscribing. The free app does not disappear because the paid tier has arrived.
3. WhatsApp Business Platform/API: a different billing model
The Platform is for more programmatic, integrated messaging at scale. Meta's current business FAQ says message charges depend on category and market. It also says that, from October 1, 2026, service messages on the Platform have a monthly allowance of 1,000 per business phone number before charges apply. That is not a charge on every ordinary app chat. Check the live Platform rate card and any provider fees before budgeting; pricing pages can change.
Do you need Meta One or an AI setup?
Ask what problem you are solving, not what badge looks nicest. If your only concern is answering a manageable number of chats yourself, keep using the free app. If you want specific paid profile or Meta Business Agent benefits, inspect your account's Meta One offer. If repeated questions pile up at midnight, on weekends or while your team is serving other customers, map the actual response workflow: approved answers, product information, qualification, human handoff and a way to spot unanswered enquiries.
Our WhatsApp AI Business guide walks businesses through setting up useful responses. The value is not “AI” written in glitter on the profile. It is helping a buyer get a relevant answer to the same delivery, pricing or availability question your team has answered 700 times—without pretending every conversation should be left to a bot. The guide and a tailored WTB setup are separate from Meta's optional subscription and Platform fees.
A three-minute decision checklist
- Using only the app? Keep it if it meets your needs; do not subscribe out of panic.
- Considering Meta One? Check the exact features, trial terms, price and eligible number shown in your app.
- Considering API or AI automation? Define monthly message volume, approved answers, human escalation, consent and all recurring provider costs before you commit.
FAQ
Do I now pay for every chat on the WhatsApp Business app?
No. The ordinary app's core messaging remains free. Charges discussed for the Business Platform are not the same thing as chats in the free app.
Does Meta One change WhatsApp Business Platform pricing?
No. Meta explicitly says the in-app subscription does not change Platform/API pricing.
